UFC 302 (on June 1, 2024) is a highly anticipated PPV card scheduled in Newark, New Jersey headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Islam Makhachev and veteran challenger Dustin Poirier. After back to back title defenses against Alexander Volkanovski, Islam looks to continue his win streak that started in 2015. In the co-main event former champion Sean Strickland takes on the powerhouse Paulo Costa.
Update: Dustin Poirier was a game challenger but the champion Makhachev’s smothering grappling proved to be too much. In the final round, Makhachev took down Poirier was a dragging low single and secured an D’arce choke to end the fight and retain his title. In the co-main, Sean Strickland swarmed Costa for five rounds and rolled to what looked like a clear unanimous decision. One judge disagreed but it still went split decision for the former champion Strickland. Makhachev took home an extra $100k in bonuses for Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night. Poirier took home a bonus $50k consolation prize in a losing effort. Kevin Holland won $50k for performance of the night by snapping Oleksiejczuk’s arm.
